iPhone 17 Air Lands in Malaysia: Slimmest iPhone Yet, Starting at RM4,999

KUALA LUMPUR: Apple will release its iPhone 17 Air in Malaysia on September 19, the same day as the United States, marking the global debut of what the company calls its slimmest iPhone ever at just 5.6mm.

Powered by the new A19 Pro processor, the iPhone Air introduces a refreshed physical design while also signalling the end of the road for the “Plus” variant, which has been discontinued for a second time.

Malaysia pricing and options

Apple confirmed that the iPhone Air will be available in Malaysia in three storage variants:

  • 256GB: RM4,999
  • 512GB: RM5,999
  • 1TB: RM6,999

Pre-orders open in Malaysia on Friday, September 12 at 8pm, a week ahead of the official launch.

Buyers can offset costs through the Apple Trade In programme, with credits ranging between RM200 and RM4,400 depending on device value and condition. Optional AppleCare+ coverage is available at RM949 across all models.

Colour choices include Sky Blue, Light Gold, Cloud White, and Space Black.

Shifting Apple’s product strategy

The iPhone Air’s arrival closes the chapter on the “Plus” range, first introduced in 2014 with the iPhone 6 Plus, discontinued after the iPhone 8 Plus in 2017, then briefly revived in 2022 with the iPhone 14 Plus. Its removal highlights Apple’s pivot toward leaner product lines, with more emphasis on flagship slim design and high-capacity storage.

Consumer implications

The entry price of RM4,999 positions the iPhone Air as a premium device in Malaysia, raising questions on how consumers balance rising smartphone costs with trade-in and financing schemes. With Apple’s pricing now well above RM5,000 for mainstream configurations, consumer upgrades are increasingly tied to ecosystem lock-in, resale value, and bundled services like AppleCare+.

Apple is betting that its thinnest design and faster A19 Pro chip, combined with consumer loyalty and global launch momentum, will keep demand strong even in price-sensitive markets.
