CEBU CITY, Sept 8, 2025 — AirAsia has officially designated Cebu as its newest hub in the Philippines, positioning the city as a strategic gateway for improved connectivity across Asia, including Malaysia. The move marks a significant milestone for AirAsia Philippines (flight code Z2) as it deepens its presence in one of the country’s fastest-growing regions.
Cebu now joins Manila as a primary operating hub for the airline, allowing it to diversify beyond the capital and expand to more domestic and international destinations. For Malaysian travellers, the new hub opens up direct access to the Visayas and Mindanao regions, improving connections to tourist hotspots such as Bohol, Cagayan de Oro, and Davao.
New Routes to Take Off in November
The hub will officially launch on 15 November 2025, with AirAsia Philippines introducing new routes and increased frequencies that will strengthen regional travel flows. The initial schedule includes:
- Cebu–Kuala Lumpur–Cebu: 14x weekly
- Cebu–Davao–Cebu: 18x weekly
- Cebu–Caticlan–Cebu: 11x weekly
- Cebu–Iloilo–Cebu: 4x weekly
- Cebu–Macao–Cebu: 3x weekly
In total, five combined domestic and international destinations will be served at the start, with plans to scale further in line with demand.
Strengthening Regional Connectivity
The decision to expand in Cebu reflects AirAsia’s broader strategy of decentralising air travel hubs in the Philippines. Cebu’s geographical position in the central Visayas makes it a natural gateway to southern Philippine destinations, while also offering efficient access to North and Southeast Asia.
For AirAsia, the hub also enables capacity realignment, offering Malaysian travellers a more direct pathway to secondary Philippine cities without transiting through Manila. Analysts see this as a move that could boost both tourism and business ties across ASEAN, particularly as air travel demand rebounds and regional carriers compete to expand their networks.
Growth Potential Ahead
The Cebu hub is expected to be expanded with additional domestic and regional routes in the coming months, cementing AirAsia’s ambition to become a key connector within Asia’s short-haul market. The airline is banking on Cebu’s growing role as both a tourism magnet and an economic centre, given its rapid urbanisation, established airport infrastructure, and rising passenger volumes.
