Kuala Lumpur, 20 March 2026 – After six years of rekindling the golden era of Hong Kong pop music, the celebrated Cantopop showcase by klpac and The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat will take its final bow with “Golden Melody: Our Story”, running from 3 to 5 April 2026 at Pentas 1, klpac.
First launched in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, the Golden Melody series emerged as more than just a musical production. It became a cultural bridge, reconnecting audiences through shared memories during a period defined by social distancing and uncertainty. Built around storytelling, humour and personal reflections from performers, the series resonated deeply, offering audiences a sense of warmth and familiarity akin to gathering with family over a timeless soundtrack.

Over the years, the production cultivated a loyal following and achieved critical recognition, most notably winning Best Musical Direction at the 18th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards in 2023. The accolade cemented its standing as one of Malaysia’s most cherished musical theatre experiences rooted in Asian pop heritage.
The final instalment, “Golden Melody: Our Story”, is positioned as the most ambitious edition yet. Featuring nearly 20 songs, the programme spans decades of Cantopop evolution, from the 1980s to the new millennium, capturing the genre’s transformation alongside the passage of time. The repertoire pays tribute to legendary voices such as Roman Tam, Alan Tam, Sam Hui, George Lam, Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui, while also celebrating modern icons including Eason Chan, Miriam Yeung, Sammi Cheng, Twins and Hacken Lee.
Beyond performers, the production also honours the creative architects behind the music, lyricists and composers such as Albert Leung, Wyman Wong, Jolland Chan and Poon Wai Yuen, whose works have shaped generations of listeners across Asia.
Helmed once again by directors Ian Chow and Alesia Dhana, the production reunites with long-time collaborator and Music Director Jacqueline Teng. The vocal ensemble features returning performers MayJune Tan, Faybee Yap, Tan Li Yang, Dickson Chai and Toh Shir Ling, supported by a five-piece band led by Teng, alongside a string trio that adds orchestral depth to the performance.
In a nod to its community roots, the team has also engaged audiences through a social media initiative, inviting fans to share personal stories tied to their favourite Cantopop songs, some of which may be incorporated into the final show, reinforcing the production’s central theme of shared memory and time.
As the curtain prepares to fall on the Golden Melody series, “Our Story” stands not just as a farewell performance, but as a celebration of Cantopop’s enduring cultural legacy. With accessible facilities at klpac, the production is positioned as an inclusive outing for audiences of all ages, particularly those who grew up with the music and wish to relive its emotional resonance with loved ones.
Tickets for Golden Melody: Our Story are priced at RM150 (Patron of the Arts), RM80 (Category 2 Zone 1) and RM70 (Category 2 Zone 2), with concession pricing available. Returning audiences from previous editions can enjoy a 20% discount on regular-priced tickets. Purchases can be made online via CloudJoi.
In an era where music consumption is increasingly digital and fragmented, the Golden Melody series reminds audiences of something timeless, that shared melodies, performed live, still hold the power to unite generations.
